Hello there! Thanks so much for stopping by! If you are on the awesome yet difficult adventure of Catholic parenting, this blog may be helpful to you. It’s hard enough to be a parent but being a Christian parent these days takes a special kind of courage. It’s not always easy to hold strong to our sometimes countercultural values while keeping our cool and more importantly keeping our kids on this path with us.  I am not an expert, and far from perfect, but home is where my heart is and I’m trying to do my best. Part of that process is learning from and sharing with other parents like you.

What I hope is that you will find in this “box”, inspiration and encouragement as we journey through this amazing vocation of marriage and family, together.

So what does the Pelican have to do with any of this? Interestingly, the pelican, has long served as a symbol of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church. You might have noticed images of the pelican in the stained glass windows of some Churches. If not, you will probably notice them now :) Traditionally, the pelican represents sacrifice and the highest form of love, agape.

Legend says, in times of famine, the pelican will give her life for her babies by striking at her own chest to produce flesh and blood to feed her little ones. Christ gave his life for us on the cross in a similar way, to give life to our souls and continues to nourish us in the Eucharist.

This reflection of the pelican is a great reminder of how we as mothers and fathers are called to live; to exemplify a heroic generosity that empowers us to lay down our life for another, especially our children whom God so graciously entrusted us with, and strive to nourish their souls with goodness, truth and love.

As Pope Benedict XVI says – “We were made for greatness, not for comfort.”  It is not easy! I  hope you will find some help here at Pelican Box and hopefully add some of your own insights as well!

Peace,

    Dear Sheena,

I love what you’re doing here…blogging about life as Catholic wife and mother is truly courageous and generous and loving, especially in a time when it is often more popular to be selfish. God bless your words and sharings so that more people can be empowered by the truth about what really matters!
